What is the coldest planet?

The coldest planet is Uranus. Its atmosphere has been measured as low as about −224 °C — the lowest temperature recorded on any planet, and colder even than Neptune, which orbits farther from the Sun. On average the two ice giants are within a few degrees of each other, but Uranus holds the record low.

Why the closer ice giant is the colder one

Neptune sits nearly 50% farther from the Sun than Uranus, so you'd expect it to be colder — yet Uranus reaches lower. The leading explanation is that Uranus, unlike every other planet, gives off almost no internal heat of its own: whatever warmth it had seems to have been shut in or lost, possibly linked to the ancient collision that knocked it onto its side. Neptune, by contrast, radiates more than twice the heat it receives from the Sun, keeping it marginally warmer despite the greater distance.

Uranus is the coldest planet and the only one tipped fully onto its side — each pole spends 42 years in sunlight, then 42 years in darkness, and it still can't warm itself.
